Pharmacist

A pharmacist is a registered healthcare professional responsible for safely dispensing medications, advising patients and healthcare staff, and ensuring the effective use of medicines. They work in settings like community pharmacies, hospitals, GP surgeries, or care homes. Key duties include checking prescriptions, offering clinical advice, delivering health services (e.g. vaccinations), and supporting medicine management. Pharmacists must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and possess strong clinical knowledge, communication skills, and attention to detail.

As a pharmacist in the UK, you'll be responsible for the safe and effective supply of medicines to patients. You'll provide expert advice on the use of prescription and over-the-counter medications, ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards, and support the wider healthcare team in promoting public health and wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

• Dispense prescription medications accurately and in accordance with legal and regulatory guidelines.


• Provide clinical advice to patients on the proper use of medicines and potential side effects.


• Ensure the safe storage and security of medicines.


• Review and validate prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, and interactions.


• Counsel patients on lifestyle advice (e.g., smoking cessation, weight loss, etc.).


• Supervise and support pharmacy technicians and support staff.


• Maintain accurate records of prescriptions, stock, and patient interactions.


• Support public health initiatives, including vaccinations and health screenings.


• Stay up to date with new medications and treatments and participate in continuing professional development (CPD).

Requirements

• MPharm degree (Master of Pharmacy) from an accredited UK university.


• Successful completion of a one-year pre-registration training placement (foundation training year).


• Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).


• Strong knowledge of pharmacology, therapeutics, and legal/ethical requirements.


• Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.


• Ability to work well independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

• Experience in a community or hospital pharmacy setting.


• Knowledge of pharmacy IT systems (e.g., PMR systems like ProScript or EMIS).


• Independent prescribing qualification (if applicable).


• Training in services such as flu/COVID-19 vaccination, blood pressure checks, or minor ailment schemes.
